Yorkshire Women Theatre Company exists to develop, create and tour high quality theatre-in-health and social education work, presenting complex health and social education messages in an accessible and entertaining way.The Company offers a touring theatre service for Community Groups, Arts Centres, Schools, Colleges,Youth Clubs and Theatres.

Theatre is an ideal format for promoting health and social education messages. It offers:-

IDENTIFIABILITY :in order to pick up a health or social education leaflet a person must already know something about an area; they must already perceive themselves as in need of that particular type of information; they must to some degree have diagnosed themselves. Theatre can allow people to see themselves afresh through identification with fictional characters. Having watched a performance and participated in an accompanying workshop, members of the audience may then be more informed as to whether particular health and social education messages are of relevance to them.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION : striking images, especially from live performance can make information more memorable and easily assimilated. It is possible to remember a play all of one’s life.

Effective Theatre offers:-

ENJOYABILITY : theatre is a pleasure to watch; it can provide spectacle, humour, music, a story.

ACCESSIBILITY : theatre is a colloquial media; it does not depend upon the written word in order to be understood. Its impact is more immediate and likely to relate directly to the lives of the audience.

SHARED EXPERIENCE
: theatre is a social activity; it removes the fear of being seen as the only person concerned about or ignorant about an issue; It automatically involves overcoming secrecy and taboos because it is an experience which, by its very nature, has to be shared.

EMOTIONAL INVOLVEMENT: theatre allows the audience to become emotionally involved with the characters whilst at the same time questioning the characters motivation through the action of the play.

APPROPRIATENESS : theatre can be accurately targeted to an audience; it can condense and crystallise key issues; it can illustrate specific examples. It can provoke thought and question assumptions. It can offer new insights, solutions and alternative possibilities in a safe setting.
